    There are actually now more mobile internet users than desktop internet users:

    52.7% of global internet users access the internet via mobile and it is predicted that mobile-connected devices will generate 68% of all internet traffic by 2017.

    With this dramatic increase in mobile users it is increasingly important for businesses to adapt.

    In addition, Google now uses mobile compatibility as a factor when ranking websites in search results.

    Whether your web site is used for proactive lead generation or simply as a reference point to direct potential clients to, its important that it portrays your business in a professional manner giving visitors confidence in your brand and ensuring that your prospects and clients can consume your content in the way that they choose.

    We first brought this topic to the fore in 2013 with our article ‘Mobile Website Design’, and even then the concept was not new.

    However, since that time, virtually every site we’ve developed has been Mobile Responsive.

    Google’s definition of ‘Mobile Friendly’ now means ‘Mobile Responsive’ so simply being able to use your site on a mobile device (i.e. not using flash etc.), is no longer sufficient; the algorithms require that you now either need a dedicated mobile site, or a mobile responsive site in order to gain take advantage of higher google ranking.

    So what does this actually mean to your business?

    Internet Search Rankings.

    If your site is not optimized for mobile devices, then it is likely that it will be lower in the search results than those that are.

    However, it’s important to note that, according to Google, this will only impact upon searches conducted on mobile devices, so rankings based on desktop/laptops searches should be unaffected.

    Visitor Engagement

    The modern 21st century web user is expecting to find what they are looking for quickly and with the least possible effort. If they can’t read your content or navigate your menus, they will go else where – and pretty quickly.
